After a world tour, time for R&R and new music for a new album, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was worth the 3 year wait following OU812. This is VH’s best engineered and produced album. Eddie on guitar, Alex on percussion, Mikey on bass, and Sammy delivering lyrically and vocally—it doesn’t get better than this. This album is a sonic powerhouse. Van Halen was the best rock band on earth.

This is hands down my favorite Van Halen album and the band's best with Sammy Hagar on vocals. The production is stellar and the band are in peak form. A must own

the ironic thing is that Van Halen actually had Alice in Chains open for them on this tour.....Talk about killing yourself to live.....

There are five great songs (Right Now, Poundcake, Top Of The World, Runaround, Judgement Day) but everything else seems like filler. Those five songs are enough for a 4.5-star, but I had to round so I rounded up.
  • Awesome

This is definately the best sound Hagar era Van Halen album. Very loud guitar driven hard rock. The closest the hagar era got too sounding like the original band (but still VERY different). Top 5 Songs: Poundcake, Judgement Day, Right Now, Top of the World, The Dream is over.
  • Van Hagar at its peak.

All Van Hagar should've never happened. No one will ever know why Ed let Sammy ruin him, but it doesn't matter. It happened and we all have to live with trash like Right Now permeating the airwaves. Where have all the good times gone?
  • Genius title 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

If you look at the first letter of each word in the title you'll get it. It's bad but creative. Any way top of the world was amazing and man on a mission has an awesome riff. Gotta love pound cake. I honestly don't know what I like better the bread or the song😝😂😂.
  • Fantastic!

This was the first Van Halen album I bought, which lead me to purchase all of their earlier ones as well. Pleasure dome is phenomenal and perhaps overlooked by most. Great album!
  • Best of Van Hagar era

I remember hearing a sneak peak of this. My jaw dropped half-way though "Pleasure Dome." Ed was just laying it on so generously. All was forgiven. (at least until VH3 where it all fell apart) This is the most consistent, “no-filler” Van Hagar album. Next up, “Balance” was good too bud it had some odd fillers.
  • Definitely hands down one of the best VH albums ever

I grew up on this album. In my youth I had rush, journey, earth wind & Fire, yes, pink Floyd, the grunge of the day and this golden gem. every song is absolutely killer and I never get tired of it. Being a guitar player myself most people that play guitar first van halen riffs they gravitate towards are ain't talkin bout love, eruption, etc etc. nope. Pleasure dome particularly the intro was what started it off for me. It completely blew my mind and I to this day having known how to play that crazy song for many many years I never get tired of it. For unlawful carnal knowledge will forever and always be the best F. U. C. K. 'n VH album in my book

listening to carnal knowledge after 24 years of its release on a Thursday night after i have put my baby to sleep, putting on my headphones in front of iTunes and being blown away in a refreshing way tells me that rock and roll has not been fun ever since 1991— the year when grunge destroyed its mainstream power. eddie van halen had amassed an amazing array of musical ideas during his formative years up until 1984, the year in which he blasted a blend of pop and rock songs that delighted ("stadium rocking-panama") and puzzled ("synth-driven jump") the band’s followers. And during a hiatus in 1985 eddie and alex have recorded some new experimental music, some of which became “the wild life" soundtrack. beginning in 1986 Eddie cranked up his songwriting power with a little help from mick jones, and in the next six years delivered a series of three albums, his masterwork—with a singer whose voice rivaled the greats. carnal knowledge is a phenomenal rock album with songs like "judgement day," "dream is over,” and “runaround” and, well “poundcake," pounding on the listener's eardrum; partly because, in this album, alex and mike are given room to shine as the pounding rhythm section. eddie’s guitar is also, for the first time—instead of the guitar through an amp attitude of the past—an overdubbed, wall-of-sound kind of texture in the mix. this new sound, at the time, made purists cringe a little, but former led zeppelin producer andy jones gets a zeppelin-esque vibe from the band in the aforementioned songs. then you’ve got the sweet instrumental “316” (with which my wife and i walked the aisle several years back.) this deceptively simple tune is a testament to eddie’s musical genius which should rank him among other long haired guys of the past like mozart and beethoven. i think these two would have also approved “right now,” a mutation of eddie’s synth experiments from the mid-80s in pure piano+guitar perfection form, firmly supported by Mike's infectious bass-line alex’s heart-pounding backbeat. today, we just don’t have another set of four boys from pasadena who can rock out like these folks did in their prime in 1991; and the time passage is making “carnal knowledge” sound even more precious in the pantheon of rock. so, if you’re my age, you’ll pick up your headphones after dark and rock out to “judgement day."
