cheronne's vocals are punky, eddie is more experimental. what's not to like?

The record company should have never put this out. It is so far below the quality we expect from VH. Such a weak record all around.
  • Atrocious

This abomination should never have been allowed to see the light of day. This should’ve been buried wherever Atari put their ET games. Yep it’s that bad 😫

I Think Now That Eddie Has Passed, Van Halen Should Take The Master Tapes And Let Sammy Hagar Create New Songs From The Existing Music!
  • Interesting exploration

Lifelong fan of the band from the first album on. Fans are fickle. There is no best or worst Van Halen album. Every album was a different document of what Ed was doing at the time. This album was perhaps the most daring, interesting exploration in the bands catalog. Gary Cherone’s a great singer. Most people knew Extreme’s hit “More than words” but couldn’t tell you who the members were. Gary was Gary on this one. We’ll never know what could’ve been, but no doubt; this is a Van Halen album and it should be considered and enjoyed as much as the rest as a unique individual document of the band’s work.

Everyone says are you Sammy or Dave Van Halen? This album is driven by the big 3, Mike, Alex, and sir Edward. While I am a DLR fan this is still some great music by the 3 masters. Gary has good pipes and if you watch him with VH live he could handle all three eras. So enjoy some great music from the masters .

This album gets a lot of crap but it’s great this is Van Halen at its best the instrumentation is amazing and the lyrics are way better than Other Van Halen albums where it’s just about partying and girls this one actually makes you think and self reflect on yourself

When I first heard fire in the hole I couldn’t get it out of my head it was catchy and sounded great like all the other songs. Eddie Van Halen is great as always and Gary Cherone sounds great I really think this is a awesome album.
  • Yes it’s the bands worst album

It’s also still got the guitar playing genius of the late great Eddie Van Halen which elevates it to as good as most other bands best work. Highlights are Without You, One I Want and Fire In The Hole. Definitely not as bad as the press it got. Hopefully people are rediscovering VH3 now. RIP EVH

I bought it when it first came out. I think its great with awesome tunes, and musicianship. Its not balance, its not 1984 but its not supposed to be. Give it a chance.

  • The problem lies in the production

In my opinion the production of this album is what really hurt it. At times the drums sound like a kid’s set. A remixing/remastering of the album I think could really change its reception.
  • VH shot themselves in the foot

this isn't as bad as most people seem to think but VH was probably asking too much for fans to accept a 3rd singer- there was just too much history with dave and sam. i honestly can't think of a band that had success with 3 different singers. if you're lucky (ac/dc, anthrax and a couple others), you can get away with 2 singers. that said, VH shot themselves in the foot with poor production. the self-produced or mostly self-produced VH efforts (5150, OU812 and 3) are their weakest efforts, imo. like most bands, VH needs a good outside ear to point them in the right direction. most of the songs were just too long and needed the fat trimmed. and sonically, it sounds like EVH tried to make cherone sound like sammy. this album could definitely use a remastering. that said, the songs are still good but with any new singer, it was a different era and phase for the band. i saw the tour and gary did real well handling material from all eras. they played songs i thought i'd never hear live, up to that point (5150 was my first concert). i know they did a 9 song album as a follow up that got scrapped and i hope it someday sees the light of day. i always thought their best chance at new, consistent music was with gary, who's a class act and a very talented vocalist. EVH just didn't put him in a good position to succeed on the first album, which sunk gary's ship. VH ended up playing musical chairs with singers and did a whole lot of nothing (no new studio albums, anyways) til 2012's very under-rated 'a different kind of truth'.

People expect things to stay the same forever. As a lifelong VH hardcore, I appreciate the growth of the band. Each album has a special something and unfortunately, 3 fell on deaf ears for most. Sure it’s different and I would’ve loved to hear Mikey’s take on the bass instead of Ed, but I still think this album is way underrated! Gary deserved better and a follow-up to this could’ve been great. It’s a shame it never came to fruition but such is band life. This is a great listen for anyone not looking for the DLR vs. Sammy argument. Thank you Eddie for all the memories. RIP

Albeit Gary is a very good vocalist though it just doesn’t work here. Still great to hear the band expand and explore this combination just doesn’t feel right.
