a must have for a dylan fan and for a music lover of almost any type. Not as great as Blood on the Tracks, but a close second....a great collection of songs...from Hurricane to Sara...and Joey and Isis and on an on....purely a magical abum. for one couldnt care less about it being all over the map and not "protesty" enuff...it is simply good songs.

This is the last Bob Dylan record. After this he would just lose interest and release bad albums. Until his renaissance in the 2000's and late 90's. But even those albums aren't as good as this.

well this might be my favorite dylan record. i think it has one of the most underappreciated songs ever "one more cup of coffee". all the songs on this record are amazing.
Not too many albums out there with songs about Joey Gallo and Ruben Carter out there!

i first encountered Desire back in high school (the 90s) after, of all things, hearing Hurricane in the movie Dazed & Confused. it was my first real Dylan experience, and though it isn't his finest, it's still my favorite. the songs on this album are different than on any other Dylan album; while most Dylan songs create a kind of musical vignette lyrically and visually, the songs on Desire seem, to me, more cohesive lyrically than any other album he's put out. i remember feeling like he was taking me on a tour around the world when i first listened to it. 15 years later, that hasn't changed a bit. i agree with the reviewer below who wonders why Black Diamond Bay isn't more popular. holy holy! this is one of the top five albums that imprinted on me as a kid, and it's totally under-appreciated.

A lyrical masterpiece. Too bad that you must buy whole album, although "Isis" and "Black Diamond Bay" are strong. Also "Sara" an accompaniment to "Sad eyed lady of the lowlands". After reviewing songs, go ahead and get the album.

This is one of Dylan's most interesting records. Can't remember who the players are (besides Scarlet Rivera and Emmylou Harris), but along with the engineers, they're a big part of why this record sounds and feels so unique. The drummer in particular was perfectly cast for this particular group of songs. While Isis, Mozambique, and Black Diamond Bay are all magnificent, Sara is one of the most personal and beautiful ballads Dylan ever wrote. Joey is overly long, but after all these years i still remember this verse:
"What time is it" said the judge to Joey when they met
"Five to ten" said Joey
The Judge said "that's exactly what you get!"
Emmylou Harris, anyone?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Emmylou's backup vocals on this album. She's one of the greatest supporting vocalists ever, not to mention an amazing artist on her own. See Graham Parsons' work for more of Ms. Harris in the background. One of my favorite voices of all time!

There are a few missteps that prevent this album from ranking among dylan's finest, but the highlights of the album make it a treasure for all of those who are fortunate enough to stumble upon it.
I can't say that I know a single person who would ever agree with me, but I would argue that "Black Diamond Bay" is the best song on here.
