but this is the best madonna album ever. i have listened to all of her albums, compliations, and singles and this entire album has her best work, besides Music and Ray of Light.

I have recently been getting into Madonna, and I have a few of her albums. I listened to this one by chance, because I didn't recognize any of the songs on it. I cannot stop listening to it. This album is so raw. RAW is the only word for this album. I'm not used to hearing such a serious side of Madonna - I feel like this album is essential to her personal development. Listening to this album relates to my life so well right now, as I'm sure it would with anyone that is 21 and in college and facing the biggest decisions of their lives. This is a MUST HAVE.

Now, when I think of Madonna I think of...well, the 80's....? But this, this is so futuristic for even 2011, it's horrifyingly spectacular. Compared to most music, this is the adroit choice. Oh! And everyone who gave this album a 3 or less star review were illiterate meaning they are imbeciles.

This is one of Madonna's strongest albums to date. I don't care that it wasn't as popular as others. What matters is Madge went out there and made a statement (which some people didn't feel to comfortable with). Stand out tracks: Hollywood, Nobody Knows Me, Nothing Fails, Mother and Father and Die Another Day. This is deep music for people who really listen to music on a deeper level than just to dance to. This album is for those people

THIS ALBUM WAS SO DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING MADGE HAD EVER DONE BEFORE, IT SHOWED OFF HER ABRASIVE SIDE.

"Nobody Knows Me" is a hot funky dance song. This is a Wonderful album with great songs. The infectious "Love Profusion" The Fun "Hollywood are just a couple of HOT songs from this CD. "Mother and Father" is a very personal song ala "Promise To Try" with personal lyrics. You also get the gem Die Another Day from 007 I don't know why some fans turned away from this CD Was it the Army military theme? Get over it and pick up this album NOW!!!!
  • Madonna's worst legit cd

Course with the average itunes rating, someone's worst cd is still a 4 star one. I can think of 8 Madonna albums top of my head that are better than this one. Almost no songs stand out. No songs just grab you. None of the rhythms are super catchy, no words uber-witty, its just there. Good album to have if you want the complete Madonna...if not, dont bother.

I'm not even a big Madonna fan and I love this CD. The lyrics are so real and the feelings are even more real! If you listen to this while thinking about the state of the country in the eyes of other nations and while our dollar is dropping and people die everywhere from idiotic beliefs- this CD will make you think.
  • Madonna's best album up until "Confessions on a Dance Floor"

With each subsequent album, Madonna has gotten better and better. Where "Ray of Light" was a highly-produced album (then the follow-up album "Music" was very sparsely-produced) this album strikes a perfect balance--being neither too rich nor too raw. While many people didn't quite get this album, I believe this album shows her fascination (and disillusionment) with Hollywood, marriage, the American Dream and her own fame while remaining Spiritual in the process.
  • Die Another Day!

I love Die Another Day! It's worth it! Personally I like techno a lot and such, and it has some rock in it so...yea :D I think that itunes should get a wishlist setting, so you could put songs aside to when you save them for later and then buy them! :D
  • The true madonna spirit

American Life was released with to much critism and negative press. The title track is probabley the weakest on the album, that said this is Madonna's most artistic and personal album to date. She leaves behind convention and catchy pop hooks for rock techno her own new hybrid. One can see the acoustic guitars and synths are almost metephoric to the traditional and modern america in which we live. This is her most daring and personal, this is an album for true madonna fans!

Madonna's album American Life is not an album that people would expect from Madonna. For many, Madonna is the firecracker that we all love her to be, but you have to look closer. This album is fantastic. It touches on personal, social, political, and religious issues that most mainstream musicians today wouldn't touch with a 30 foot pole. Is the problem that people don't want to think about social issues when listening to music? Should it all be about love, sex, drugs and having a good time? While the answer to that question is for every person individually, Madonna makes sure that if you listen to this album, you have a great time, and you actually think. This album is one that really becomes more potent the longer you listen to it. Don't let your first impressions be the only ones that you make about this album, it gets better and better as you listen to it more and more.
  • NONE BETTER

This is the best Madonna album period. Sure the 80's were fun and carefree and she may never live down the sexual issues, and quite frankly she was ahead of her time then also, when you turn on the radio now you might as well be watchin porn because that is what is sounds like. However noone is crucified for that now it is the norm. The function of art is to stimulate and comment on the world around you, which is exactlty what this album does. The most underrated album of this performers career, it was honest, insightful, spiritual, and before she once again settled for what everyone expected from her. I doubt we will have a Madonna album like this ever again.
  • One of the deepest, smartest and most melodic of her albums.

It was really about timing, people didn't expect something like this at that time. But true artists also do what they feel, not what people want from them. Personally, my favorite Madonna albums are somehow the ones that are the most underrated (Erotica and American Life). When it comes to music or art I don't care what critics and the media say, or even what my friends say. This album was meaningful for her (of course) and meaningful for me. When all the bad comments about this album were around I was like: "What are you talking about? I loved it!". Don't listen to me or any other critics, you have to give it a try and decide if it talks to you or not. In my case: Love profusion and X-Static Process are a piece of heaven, these 2 songs make the album worth. And Hollywood and American Life are not only catchy but smart songs. I love the way this album is acoustic and electronic at the same time. I like it better than Ray Of Light. Again, it's all about personal preferences. Ah, and one more thing: I love the rap part in American Life!!!! It’s funny and original!!! It’s not gang rap, it’s not meant to be mainstream rap, it’s meant to be whatever the artist felt at that time.

The song "American Life" pactically ruins the whole albulm. The lyrics are very idiotic and painfully crowd pleasing. She sounds like another one of those ignorant protesters. Painfully unoriginal.
  • Madonna being ahead of her time!

Everyone expects new Madonna tunes to explode like firecrackers across the pop music landscape. That comes from her origins as a pop sensation; critics think a "flash in the pan" has to keep flashing. Give this album time. The quality runs deeper and deeper. "Nothing Fails" is one of the greatest Madonna songs ever. "Love Profusion" and "X-Static Process" aren't far behind. Plus you get the terrific, if mercenary, "Die Another Day." She's always done great tunes for movies.
