  • It's One Of Those Albums...

Have you ever just listened to an album and love every last minute of it, but you have no idea why. This is one of those albums to me. For example, I can list off every reason why Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" is my favorite album, but I can't even give one for why I like this album so much. I am not even a big '80s music guy. I generally regard the decade as a throwaway decade in music. The point is that I really like this album a lot, I can't tell you why I like it so much, and the fact that I can't explain it drives me up a tree.

There are four good songs, "We Didn't Start..." Ain't one one of them. "And So It Goes" is possibly his greatest song, musically and lyrically.
  • GOOD Joel ...............

This is my favorite LP of Billy Joel. I missed out of the hits in the seventies because of my age, but I like them too. Videos were matched to many songs on this LP. My favorite hits - "I Go to Extremes" and the beautiful ballad "And so it goes". Good energy and vocals on this LP.

This album brings up so many memories of driving in the car with my brothers... we were all about this album, and my parents were more than willing to accommodate! Great album, from start to finish.

Billy Joel's love song to all of you is "And So It Goes." For decades he has put himself out there for you to love or hate, remember or forget, but in all of the relationships that you have with all of your favorite artists, when has one ever so poignantly given you something as tender and dear as "And So It Goes"? In the great debate of who are the greatest American singer/songwriters of the past 40 years, Billy Joel has long earned a spot with James Taylor, Carol King, Paul Simon, Aimee Mann, Dan Fogelberg, Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson among others. Storm Front is simply another chapter in the Joel anthology, each song a different character, each one different from the next. But mostly there's something to love in an artist who can lay himself bare as devastaingly sweet with "And So It Goes," our very own love song.

All I have to say is, to anyone who thinks Billy isn't a terrific lyricist, listen to "And so it Goes." Hands down the best lyrics I have ever heard in a song.
  • I don't get it!

I have no idea why the songs (except "We Didn't Start the Fire" don't have a higher rating. This is a fantastic album and in my opinion should be considered a classic! another great one by Billy.

... is by far one of the most moving and well written song I've ever heard. No, I'm not a Easter seaboard fisherman, but I sure get the feeling of what it's like simply by listening to this beautifully composed song. Also, "Leningrad" is a moving story of a Cold War man trapped behind the Iron Curtain and his tale of turning his misfortune of losing his father into an opportunity to cheer up the childern who share his plight by becoming a circus clown. Corny? I don't think so. And, if you've never heard "We Didn't Start the Fire", then you probably don't know who Billy Joel is anyways. It's time to find his other creative works. Download "Storm Front" today and share in the experiance that has made this musician one of the most celebrated of all time. -Austin

  • Joel didn't need to go to such extremes

"I Go To Extremes" is either about an emotionally wrought Joel or about the extremes Joel took when making "Storm Front," a noisy affair feauturing some good song craftmanship with some really fluff based pop production. It's Joel at his most uneven. The wild popularity of the almost annoying "We Didn't Start the Fire" was an example of the excess of the album. It's not a bad song, but is a gimmicky song we don't expect given Joe's history as a singer/songwriter. Gimmicks and shoddy production aside though, this album has some exceptional songs from Joel. "The Downeaster Alexa" is a fisherman's plight against changing waters and is very well crafted. This is Joel in Springsteen territory, recognizing the plight of the working man. The aforementioned "I Go To Extremes" is an excellent example of Joel putting together a good pop/rock song and one of the few areas on the album where the big production works. "Shameless" is a good song that would've been better without the synths. Garth Brooks handles the track better. "Leningrad" is probably the overlooked gem. It pays tribute to Joel's time touring Russia and makes even more sense if you can still find Joel's doc about the tour 'A Matter of Trust.' The album closes with "And So it Goes," which is classic Joel. In fact if you peer at the liner notes, the song is from 1983. Standing among the newer material, it sounds better. So why the lower rating with all these good songs? Because when they're bad, they're BAD. Joel has gotten away with giving us one or two pieces of filler on albums in the past, but this one gives us three very annoying tracks along with misguided production on some otherwise good ones. He fails usually when he's doing these loud full scale pop numbers, such as the album opener, Storm Front and the unforgivable "When in Rome," which milks an old saying for all its worth. "We Didn't Start the Fire" is a poorly done song guised as a clever one, partiuclarly because of the repetitive melody. Joel usually doesn't falter on melodies, but he does here. So in the end, "Storm Front" is an uneven affair. Excess ruins it, but who's to say a more spare production could've saved the lesser songs. Joel had one more full pop album after this that was a little better overall. Yet "Storm Front" still gets some listens as the good songs are VERY good, particularly Leningrad. There's something about the melody that's haunting and the lyric is probably one of the most moving, addressing some of the feelings of the cold war. But Joel takes the song further by inserting a human element that makes it poetic and moving both lyrically and musically.
