When I was a junior in high school – there was one night when I took a walk around my neighborhood and I put the cassette tape - Love Over Gold into my Walkman. The song Telegraph Road came on... This song was life-changing for me... I am now 52 years old and this song is in my top five favorites of all time! In1992 I had the privilege to see Dire Straits in concert. THANK YOU

....and I was fortunate to see the tour for this album as a GI stationed in Germany . I was a minor fan of the band before I saw them live and became a huge fan after seeing them. Mark Knopfler is an amazing guitarist and this CD helps to show his creativeness. A must buy CD for anyone that appreciates "guitar" music.
  • A timeless classic!

The iTunes review of this album does not do justice to the tremendous compositional virtuosity of Mark Knopfler and the largely overlooked versatility of the Dire Straits rock and roll band. While the Straits made their name with the earlier, radio friendly hits like Sultans of Swing and Lady Writer, their multi-dimensional musical repertoire shines through on the experimental masterpiece, Private Investigations, and the lyrically moving title track, Love Over Gold. While the longer run times may make this album less radio friendly, and thus less appreciated by pithy pop music crits, the songs are a masterful tribute to Knopfler's storytelling prowess and guitar ingenuity. The opening track, Telegraph Road, is Knopfler's tour de force and should always be mentioned with the likes of Stairway To Heaven and Comfortably Numb in the ranks of epic songwriting achievements that will forever bask in perpetual rock glory.

When I was 15 or 16 (early 80s) I heard Industrial Disease and immediately went out and bought this album thinking these Dire Straits folks must write a bunch of poppy, dance tunes. To my shock it was all this mellow, melodic piano/guitar duets. Disappointed, the album sat unlistened to until one day I put it on again and listened... and let it wash over me. I was hooked. Telegraph Road is one of the great rock masterpieces of Knopfler's generation. Amazing stuff.

Had this album in college. Dire Straights have always been an exceptional band, and their albums interesting to listen to. This one is no exception. Haunting melodies and lyrics, you can't go wrong here.
  • A classic masterpiece

This is, in my opinion, is simply Dire Straits best work. Just Telegraph road alone, makes this album complete but the remaining songs help make it a classic. Mark has reached his highest point in his career with Dire Straits here. Each songs has its own character and reflecting Mark's expertise in song writing as well as his guitar playing.

One of the best albums ever. My only complaint is that Telegraph Road isn't 14 minutes longer!
  • Very Underrated

For those of you who are stagnant towards buying this album just because they're only five songs, don' fret. This album is very powerful. Each song on this album has a distinct sound to it and the addition of Guy Fletcher on keyboards gives all of these songs a mystical feeling to them. Knopfler's lyrics are great as usual and and obviously his guitar playing in each song on this album is even better. You will not regret buying this album if you do. It's a great album even though it is overshadowed by another Dire Straits album- Brothers in Arms.

Love Over Gold was without a doubt one of the best albums of 1982. it had an awful lot of good competition. The band sustains an edgy, tingly mood throughout the album, like the beginning of the thunderstorm on the cover. It sends chills over the skin. Over their first 4 albums they seemed to outdo themselves with each passing album culminating in Love Over Gold. Truly a labor of love. Unfortunately, after this album they seemed to go for the gold instead. I was never sure why. They seemed to have a pretty good following through this album. Don't miss this one.

I will start by saying I am an original die hard Dire Straits fan from the 70s and originally purchased this in the early 80s when it came out. I no longer have records and just re-purchased it through Itunes. My feelings about this album haven't changed in 25 years; it is a bit pretentious, but Knopfler never sounded better musically or vocally. It is a powerful album and, while overall I prefer Making Movies, it is the high water mark for Dire Straits, which after this album went screaming over the cliff and is no more
  • KVRE Memories....

This was a shared favorite of mine and late night DJ Scott Kinzy from an era of passionate musical discovery. Scott would have 12-6am shifts, monday through friday, which slots i would later fill on a resurrected version of KVRE-FM in Santa Rosa. "Telegraph Road", from this, and also the version from Dire Straits' live "Alchemy", for me, was one of many marks of the overnight show coming into it's own. "Industrial Disease" and "Love Over Gold" were popular choices for the daytime jocks, but getting a listen to "Telegraph" or "Private Investgations" during what Andy Griffith's character, "Lonesome Rhodes, from Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd" would call "The dividin' line" (4am) was true rock and roll enchantment. Thank You, Scott... I'll always think of you with this one.
