Middle of the road

An avg album with a 2-3 great songs.
Average when it comes to this band equals pretty strong.
But Making Movies isn’t in the same zip code as Communique or the 1st album.
Romeo & Juliet is a big song.
Skate away is a cool departure from the norm. Expresso Love used to be on the radio here & there…
Les Boys… Knopfler being Knopfler.
He’s either bigoted, or has wandering thoughts.
Either way, a weak album closer.
If you are getting into Dire Straits, get the first two albums. Those two are complete efforts. World Class Albums.
Great songs throughout with shredding guitar.
Mesmerizing!

Dire Straits at their very best. I saw a documentary on Mark a few years ago, and a couple of highly respected guitar players in the business said Mark's solo on "Tunnel of Love" may be the most beautiful guitar solo ever recorded! Perfection! Just amazing talent.

In defense of Les Boys

I agree with all of the 5 star ratings. Knofler sings and plays guitar with passion. Roy Brittan plays a similar epic style of keyboards as he did on Springsteen's "Born To Run" album. Every song is better than good, if you have to buy just one song start with the beginning, "Tunnel of Love" then contrast its power with the next passionate ballad about lost love, "Romeo & Juliet."
I understand why some say "Les Boys" is a dissapointment. It lacks the power of its six predecessors. However, its detailed description of a "Disco Bar" in post-WWII Germany is very intriguing, tounge-in-cheek, satire; "It's all in fun now."

Like many here this is one of my all-time favorite albums, but unlike many that goes for every song on it. Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite songs (I also recommend Amy Ray's acoustic cover). Tunnel of Love is epic too. i don't understand all the bashing of Les Boys in these reviews (maybe you just have to be gay to appreciate it, or understand how rare it was for such a song to even exist at the time it came out}.
Dire Straits is a great band. A college buddy introduced me to them way back before anyone had heard of them, praising their cohesiveness and generous sharing of the musical spotlight with nobody overplaying. They're very much like The Band in that regard. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing is a joy.
Buy it. Listen to it often.
Maybe the Best 6 Songs Ever Strung Together

I confess: I don't understand Les Boys. I tried. However, the rest of the album is so outstanding I would have to give up listening to music altogether not to own it. The emotions, the pacing, this is the kind of music that demands your attention. From the opening bars of Tunnel of Love to the last bit of Solid Rock, Making Movies never lets go of you. I would put this in the Top 10 Rock Albums of all time--that's how great it is.
Always Loved this album

This is a classic. If you think you love indie rock and have never heard this then you don't know what you are talking about (yeah hipster listen and learn). Every track is amazing and even the 'weak link' Les Boys is a great song.
Best of their best

The strength of this album is it's incredible understated musicality. Down to three members after the departure of David Knofler, the band proved that three can be equal to four. Trying to prove they had more to offer than Sultans, they put down 6 tracks which rank amongst their best (Les Boys should have been a b-side, but it's humor stands on its own.) Knofler continues in his Dylanesque style of singing with his best lyrics to date.
If you know Straits as 'Brother in Arms', you don't fully know them. This should be your first purchase as it is the very best they did.
Every serious collection should continue this CD

Great disk through and through. Only one song that is not top notch...the remainder is exceptional. Romeo is one of the best of all time, Tunnel of love is fantastic, Skateaway is great and that's the 1st side of the LP. Expresso Love is a great little rocker, Hand in Hand is a beautiful little song and Solid Rock is a nice rocker as well. I'm not a fan of Les Boys but 6 out 7 is a winner. Trust me, you won't regret this purchase.

"Tunnel of love"-One of the best songs ever recorded period!! Knopflers best guitar work on this album alongside the debut album. "Romeo & Juliet" is a beautiful song, and "Solid Rock" is just good old fashioned rock & roll from on of the best bands ever. Only low point is "Les Boys", I don't know why they did that song, but everyrhing else is rock solid.

Skateaway creates an aura that moves one to another time, Romeo and Juliet is my wife's favorite song, Espresso Love is has an energy that characterizes their live performance...all proving why this is their best. They had not hit their full stride here in the states yet, but that did not stop critics from hailing this masterpiece.
Glorious - but of course, it

This was the one that woke me up to Dire Straits..I fell in love while listening to this-and it's been part of the soundtrack of my life so far..extraordinary. Mark K has probably the loveliest, most personal voice and has always been the epitome of maleness and intelligence for me.
I could spend alot of money buying his most recent music - but this album will always be it for me. Absolutely the best.
Phenomenal !!

the Dire Straits do not get any where near as much credit as they deserve. They only came out with 6 albums, only one of which has over 9 songs, but every album is absolutely amazing. That solo at the end of Tunnel of Love, where the guitar builds up from almost nothing is breathtaking. And Romeo and Juliet and Les Boys are two other phenomenal pieces of art. People think that since it has only 7 songs, that it is not worth $10, but those three songs alone are worth twice that. I guarentee that this is a purchase you won't be disappointed to make... =)

This album is epic. I own it in vinyl, on cd and have downloaded it onto my ipod. Every cut with the exception of "Les Boys" gets 5 stars.
