I'm a huge fan of switchfoot... but this is terrible. If your going to remix an album don't do a bunch of dubstep crap on a rock album. Think people!

I never thought Switchfoot would sound good in such an electronic setting, but these re-mixes are really cool. This album in particular, I think, lends itself much more to remixes than, say, Oh, Gravity! or The Beautiful Letdown would. I still like the original Vice Verses better, but this was a pleasant suprise.
  • Nice set of remixes

This album is worth buying for any Switchfoot fan. I don't like the remixed version of The War Inside, because it loses the backbeat feel that made the original version so good. All the other ones are great, though.

Most of the songs on here are pretty great. I love Switchfoot, and I think they did a pretty good first try with remixes and techno. I agree with a couple other comments; Don't get this album if you're listening to this band for the first time. Get "Hello Hurricane" or "Beautiful Letdown". I think my favorite album of theirs is "Hello Hurricane". Simply amazing. The Original: This remix is not my favorite, they didn't do such a good job on this one. They cut out a lot of the lyrics and used voice distortion, so it sounded a little wierd. I think the maxiumum of this song was reached with the normal version. That one was rockin'. Selling the News: It was really cool the first minute, but then it repeats the same techno part for the whole thing and it makes you go, "Please, something else!" They did a lot of lyric cutting in this too. Maximum was reached in normal version. Blinding Light: One of the best songs on this album. They kept in all the lyrics and added a little synth and guitar... The chorus was pretty sweet. If you only want to get a few songs off this, definetly get this one. More maximum when remixed. Darkest Horses: This one was OK. I liked that they kept in most of the lyrics, but you know in a song you look forward to the chorus? Well, in this song you look forward to the verses. The chorus is a little boring. The normal version was better. Vice Verses: This was OK, the voice distortion was wierd though. I didn't like that. Probably the only thing I didn't like. The War Inside: One of the better ones on the album. Definetly below Blinding Light, but still pretty good. They made it sound more airy than the normal version. About the same though, preference wise. Afterlife: Absulutly the best song on this album. It is terrific. My jaw dropped to the floor when I heard it the first time. Great techno and synth, They kept in the vast majority of the lyrics, and it was a little faster than the normal version. Definetly a must buy.

I love Switchfoot and Jon Foreman, but I was pretty nervous when they announced this remix. However, this album totally surprised me with a few excellent tracks: 1. The Original 2. Blinding Light 3. Darkest Horses 4. The War Inside These were all amazing. The Original has a really cool groove, and I like how they vocalized the lead guitar riff. Blinding Light absolutely blew me away with the amazing chorus (I like it better than the first version). Darkest Horses has a very cool sound to it, considering how heavy it was originally. And finally, The War Inside: this song was made to be remixed, absolutely awesome with the new musical dynamics and cutouts. To be honest though, I was so disappointed with the remaining tracks. Selling the news is pretty annoying. Afterlife is bearable. But Vice Verses? Really?!? They should never have touched such a beautiful song and turned it into they did. But that's just my opinion. The good songs make up for the awful ones.

Totally awesome…especially the Adam Young remix of Blinding Light. Switchfoot and Owl City are my favorite bands ever and so both of them coming together to make a remix is just insane.

(Song by song review if you click "More") Let me preface this with my history with Switchfoot. I own every album that they have ever released, and have impatiently awaited every single one. I pre-order if possible, buy the super ultra deluxe version with outtakes, and have seen Switchfoot in concert four times, and have been blown away by everything ever done by these guys (or Jon Foreman for that matter). I was still excited for this album, though not as much as for a typical release (for obvious reasons). My experience with remix albums is that the author (Switchfoot in this case) gives some people freedom to re-track some of their songs with their own ideas, and then the other person goes and makes a much worse version of the song. I think this was the case with 5 of these songs. The other two are unusual for remixes, they are as good or better than the originals, and are worth playing along side the rest of Switchfoot's vast repertoire. I suggest only buying tracks 3 and 7. 1. The Original: Kind of lame. A lot of the lyric cuts seem half hazard. Basically just distorted the drums, added a really annoying base line, added what sounds like kids singing the interludes, and some autotuned stuff over that. Wasn’t really a fan of this song in the first place, but I don’t think the changes really helped it much. Long periods of drum beats with random instruments and vocals popping up get boring. I end up skipping it when I start the album. 3/10 2. Selling the News: I like the guitar, and the synth line is cool… for the first 20 seconds… then you realize its going to repeat for the rest of the song, and it gets really annoying. This was one of my favorite songs on the album originally, but this remix removes a lot of the great verse lyrics, and again, the constant synth line is really annoying after awhile. As a whole I still like this version. 5/10 3. Blinding Light: This song is just amazing. I wasn’t really a fan of it on the Vice Verses album, but the remix fixes all the things I didn’t like about it, and it is now one of my favorites. The airy, punchy sound that Adam added to this is just wonderful. I like that he left the lyrical structure the same as the song was. Remixes don’t have to take away lyrics or move them around to be great, as this one proves. For me this actually replaces Switchfoot’s original version. Thank you Adam! If Jon Foreman and Adam young ever team up for an album I would just… die of happiness. 9/10 4. Darkest Horses: I like a lot of the new instrumentation and sounds, but what’s with the voice sounding twice as far away as the original? Not bad but the tweaks they made on the vocals sort of kill it for me. Obviously no comparison to the original. Also, the musical interlude they added at the end is just a bit weird… Sounds like a super cheap synth pad. I really like the orchestral sound in the background, but I wish they had let that out a bit more. 7/10 5. Vice Verses: I really don’t like the chord progression here. Also, not a huge fan of the vocal distortion. The weird beat and chords randomly thrown in half way through the chorus are just awkward. Again, obviously not a substitute for the original version. 4/10 6. The War Inside: Sounds like a beat with random pieces of the song thrown in from time to time. I do like a few of the sections of it, where they introduce some cool musical pieces, but overall the beat gets kind of old. 6/10 7. Afterlife: Epic. Epic. Epic. I love Afterlife in its original form, but this remix is so awesome. It easily just as good as the non-remix version. I will be listening to both for sure. I wish Neon Feather and Adam Young had been asked to do all of the songs (sorry other re-mixers, these guys just blow you out of the water). I have never heard of Neon Feather, but he did an absolutely amazing job with this. The synths are heavy, complementing the track perfectly, the new beats are awesome and punchy. Again, this guy left a lot of the lyrical structure in place, and made an epic remix. Play. Repeat. Epic. 10/10

I love Switchfoot. I love Electronica/Techno. But these do not mix. If you want good Switchfoot, listen to their original album. If you want good electronica/techno, listen to Deadmau5, Daft Punk, and yes, Owl City. This album is basically the original songs with a techno beat in the background. While semi-unique, it doesn't present me with anything amazing in either genre. I've never been a big fan of remixes anyways, and this album falls very short.
