If Love, Hate, Love (especially this live version) is not a vocal and lyrical perfection, than i don’t know what is. Makes me wonder how is it humanly possible to sing the way Layne did, how did he live with his own thoughts..The very first time i heard it i was, without exaggeration - mind blown and this particular performance brings that same feeling back EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Having grown up in the "grunge " era and from the greater Seattle area this album is absolutely great . Alice in Chains was never fully discovered in my opinion until some of their sons made it on the main stream radio. Alice in Chains had so much more to offer than the radio stations would play. Truly a very talented band especially to today's music. The vocal chemistry between Lane & Jerry has yet to be duplicated and who knows where they could have gone but great memories

quite an awesome album. as far as live grunge, this is the flag bearer and the standard, followed by nirvana's "live at reading" album. they have such a heavy sound in their studio albums that i felt this would be an interesting purchase. i felt that this was basically the same way i was when i first encountered nirvana live at reading. skeptical at first, but blown away when i sat down and listened to it.
1. Bleed the freak 10/10
such a heavy opening. really sets the pace of the album. i'd say better than the original
2. Queen of the radio 9/10
kind of a joke song. i would compare this to "love song" on the Sap EP or "swing on this" on Jar of Flies. still good though.
3. Angry Chair 10/10
this gets the album going again. they keep that really heavy sound. this is done a little faster than the studio version, but still done very well. i love how this flows right into man in the box.
4. Man in the Box 12/10
far surpasses the original! this is the best song on the entire album. when layne hits the chorus, he hits it with 10 times as much power, emotion, feeling, and raw strength as the studio version. when i first heard it, i just sat back and enjoyed it because i have never heard a grunge singer, or really any other singer, put that much power into a raspy scream as that. if you buy one song, make it this.
5. Love, Hate, Love 11/10
the second best song on here. this is done with so much power and and is so impressively heavy that i can't even handle it. this is another song that surpasses the studio version, which says a lot, because the studio version is one of alice in chains' best songs.
6. Rooster 10/10
they just keep it rolling here. great song after great song after great song. the momentum of this album is amazing. they pack even more awesome into this than the studio version, although in some parts it kinda screams out for the little guitar fills that the studio version has. nevertheless, amazing.

you can feel layne's pain on here. i feel this is one of his most powerful vocal performances ever on this song, and you can just feel the emotion flowing to you when he starts singing the chorus.
8. Junkhead 10/10
this surpasses the studio version, and it just continues the momentum of the album. it rocks so hard, but the lyrics are so dark that it makes you feel the deepest empathy for layne and his addiction.
9. Dirt 10/10
"we're gonna do a song off our album dirt. this song's called dirt" oh the way layne says that makes me crack up. they lose a little bit of the heaviness of the studio version, but it still rocks.
10. Them Bones 10/10
short sweet, heavy, and to the point.

never has grunge been so catchy and, weirdly enough, vaguely swingy. very well done

Such a heavy and perfect ending the greatest live grunge album ever.
Layne shows his vocal perfection throughout.
Jerry knows how to add every fill necessary to make each song the heaviest and most powerful it can.
Mike Inez has the usual tasty bass going on. (except for bleed the freak and queen of the rodeo. where mike starr has his tasty bass going on)
and sean kinney shows why he is one of the best drummers around.

Maybe it's because Alice never considered releasing a live album other then the unplugged session, but whoever did the final mixing should be screamed at because it's just a poor job.
A good look through the live performances, but the mixing leaves a lot to be desired.

This is a really good album, a lot of times when you listen to live albums there are a bunch of songs you don't even like or you have never heard of some of the songs. That is not the case with this album, it is all the hits. I really hope they record a live album with DuVall. R.I.P Layne.

As a polar opposite to their only other live official release, Unplugged, here are the boys doing things the more traditional way. While not all of this album reaches the lofty standards you would hope for, there are plenty of good moments that make this a must have for any fan.

This is an awsome album. This would even make a good first album for a new AIC listner, which isn't the case for most artists live albums. Sooooo glad i found it on itunes, and you should but it yourself.

This album is amazing. I couldn't believe how good they sounded live. I don't know why everyone says Man In The Box is bad live. It's faster and Jerry's voice sounds cooler during the chorus. If you get the actual disk, it tells you when they were recorded and Bleed The Freak and Queen Of The Rodeo (both amazing, especially Bleed The Freak) were the only ones on here done with Mike Starr on bass. Very powerful album and it sounds very dark. This is not the place to start with AIC, but if you own the important albums (Dirt and Facelift), this is great. Highly recommended.

Alice in Chains ROCKS!! Layne Staley was the Best! I have to agree this album isnt their best work but I still like it and added it to my collection. Bleed the freak was great!, Queen of the Rodeo is F...ing Funny! Its true Man in the box was done with less feeling than Ive heard LS sing it before but everyone has off days. He always put his heart and soul into his music and it showed. He sang with feeling. The music the lyrics meant something to him. He wasnt in it just for the money. He inspired so many people and some of those people now have groups of their own that we now enjoy. So he had an off night BIG DEAL. I still enjoy the CD and for true AiC fans its a must have. I like the little extras it has in between some songs. ;) lol I would LOVE to see iTunes get more AiC videos and concerts on video. I have requested it but havent seen any so far.
AIC Live - The Studio Masters Meet Their Toughest Test

Alice In Chains relied heavily on production in the studio. Harmonies, Multi-track guitar leads/rhythms, Background vocals, etc. That, combined with the necessary and omnipresent volatility of the band, makes this live set a true test of AIC and their translation from the studio to the stage.
With this in mind you can notice where some of the denser songs thin out (and why). Listen to "Them Bones" and "Man In The Box" to see AIC struggle to keep their trademark density during a live set. These songs show the magic of the dichotomy between Layne and Jerry.
Layne and Jerry support each other's vocals in key spots and the rhythm section pumps up to thicken guitar solos which, otherwise would sound weak in comparison to their studio work.
AIC LIVE is an awesome study in a band rising to meet challenges. Beyond that, they will blow you away with "Love, Hate, Love", "Bleed The Freak", and "Dam That River".
A masterpiece and what should be the gold standard of all live albums coming out today.

i realy like this band, they weremy third favorate grunge band. But theme live isn't the best. however, rooster is great live, but man in a box just soungs boring so don't buy it.
